Newegg's New GPU Trade-in Program

Magnifying glass hovering over Newegg logo

The large online computer hardware store Newegg has come up with a new GPU trade-in program for customers looking to upgrade their graphics cards. Essentially the company will take your old graphics card and offer you a newer, now discounted, one depending on how much your old one is worth. Trials were conducted in September and the scheme was officially announced on the 23rd of September.

The discount you'll receive is fairly low. Their reasons for doing this is most likely so they can update their stocks of the COVID generation of graphics cards allowing them to refurbish and re-sell your old hardware. Expect CEX prices... Estimates listed on their website range from the 2060 6GB at $90.00 up to the 3090Ti 24GB at $561.00. By going to the product page after searching for your GPU you'll have the option to check the trade-in value.

It's looking like Newegg isn't going to take any cards made before the AMD RX 5000 series (July 2019) or the Nvidia RTX 20 series, from fall 2018. Once you buy your new GPU, Newegg sends you a label, and then you have 14 days to return the old one for the quoted value. Once everything looks good after they've received it, they’ll apply the credit as a refund to your original form of payment.

According to the company, it's using this scheme as a way to avoid electronic waste and prevent you from having to go through the hassle of having to sell your old card yourself . Essentially you're paying for the convenience, much like most other trade in programs or pawn shops.

Unfortunately this is not yet available in the UK, however it is expected to be soon. Although we're not thoroughly impressed with the new scheme, it could be a lot worse price wise and could pave the way for other companies to follow suit and battle it out for competitive valuations. Prevention of E-waste is also encouraging and a new and simpler path to the next generation of GPUs is always a positive in our book.
